The story about how I finally got my Wordpress version updated via the Wordpress Automatic Updater plugin.

I finally got around to upgrading my wordpress installation for the site. I let it go for a long time and ended up going from 2.0.1 to about 2.9.2. It’s a huge jump and I expect to find lots of good stuff.

I ran the wordpress automatic update plugin here and it worked great (It’s fantastic), until I got this…..

You cannot upgrade because WordPress 2.9.2 requires MySQL version 4.1.2 or higher. You are running version 4.0.27.

….So my 1and1 account was running too old of a version of MySQL 4 database. So I had to actually get involved. I went ahead and created a new MySQL 5 database and updated wordpress to use that one. I then went into phpMyAdmin and used the .sql file I got from the backup of the db to add all the content to the new database. But then I ran into another snag…the phpMyAdmin that I was using on 1and1 limits you to a 2048KB text file, though it does support compression.

Well long story short, I think I’m back up and running…but I’ve lost all the comments…except one.

I’d suggest for people running the older versions of wordpress use the WPAU. It’s my understanding that this functionality is built into Wordpress Core now.

In my hiatus from working with this site, I’ve picked up Drupal. To date, there is no equivalent auto upgrade module for Drupal, and that community IMHO should be green with envy.
